MALIBU WINE TASTING

Saddlerock Estate Club Ranch
Saddlerock Estate Club Ranch
In April of 2008 I was informed of wine tasting in Malibu. I was so surprised and excited to discover Rosenthal–The Malibu Estate, and Malibu Family Wines. Wow, wine tasting in my own backyard, a little piece of heaven only 40 minutes from home.  I was used to traveling at least a couple of hours to find the getaway wine trips. I have lived in Los Angeles County my whole life, and why haven’t I discovered this sooner? I felt this would be a great opportunity to share my experience, and hopefully try to help put Malibu on the map so more people can enjoy a day at the beach and experience great wine!

Malibu consists of more than 40 independent vineyards from the Santa Monica Mountains, and Topanga Canyon to Malibu. Viticulturist Bob Tobias claims, “there are an estimated 150+ acres of usable land to plant the vineyards.” The types of grapes being grown in this region are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Many of Malibu’s vineyards have their wines made at Camarillo Custom Crush Winery. http://www.homebeerwinecheese.com/winery.htm

So far there are only two fabulous locations to relax and enjoy wine tasting in Malibu; Rosenthal-The Malibu Estate, and Malibu Family Wines. You can relax and enjoy tasting several varietals from their very own vineyards. Also, there are several wine bars in Malibu with very comprehensive wine lists, including locally grown wines.  For instance, Barrel Malibu located on Malibu Road in Malibu has a unique establishment with a full service bar, and an Ecomatic system that is self service.  This method dispenses wine at 1 ounce pours so you can taste several varietals ranging from $1.00-$120.00.  John Selman, Managing Partner describes their wine bar as, “the playground for adult wine lovers.” That’s my kind of place!!

ROSENTHAL-THE MALIBU ESTATE

This was my second trip to Rosenthal-The Malibu Estate wine

Rosenthal Tasting Room
Jim, Doug, Shawn
tasting room on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. I was so impressed the first time; I wanted to write something special about them. It was a beautiful Thursday afternoon, and I was greeted by Shawn Leis Assistant Winemaker, Doug Anderson, and Jim Galicia. They were so proud of their wines and anxious to start tasting their varietals that within minutes of coming through the door I had a glass of wine in front of me.

MALIBU FAMILY WINES

ImageWow, what a great find. Malibu Wines Tasting Room nestled in the hills of the Santa Monica Mountains on Mulholland Highway just off of Kanan Dume. This is the type of place to go with your significant other, or a group of friends and family. It can be fun, relaxing, romantic, and educational. The grounds are park like with lush green grass, massive trees to shade the area, and in the distance you can spot the flourishing vineyards. There are several tables to sit and enjoy a bottle of wine, or bring your favorite food.

Ventana Vineyards
As we were leaving Monterey headed for home, we spotted Ventana Vineyards wine tasting. We saw this lovely structure made of stone, resembling the Old Stone House Historic Building, originally built by the Dutch.  It looked so inviting we had to make one last stop, and we were so, so happy we did. We entered into a cozy courtyard and there was this feeling of serenity.  There were tables where we could sit and enjoy a glass of wine, surrounded by the lush greenery and beautiful flowers that were blooming.
